A Mine Emergency Operations Center is locating in western Kentucky.

Mine Safety and Health Administration officials told The Messenger that they expect the center in Madisonville to be open by mid-2013. MSHA district manager Jim Langley said the closest center is now in Beckley, W.Va.

Langley said it takes eight to nine hours to get to mines near Madisonville from West Virginia. With the new operations center, it will take about 30 minutes.

Ron Burns, assistant district manager of the Madisonville MSHA office, says the center will have items such as breathing apparatuses, tubing for air samples and gas detectors.
