NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Officials in Metro Nashville are considering whether to impose a fee on items sold in the downtown area.
Under the proposal, the city would impose a .25 percent fee on goods and services sold in Nashville's Central Business Improvement District.
The Tennessean reports the ultimate aim is to raise enough money to help lure major conventions to Music City Center.
The fee would raise an estimated $1 million each year, which would be used to help underwrite rent that convention groups pay to use the center.
Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp. President Butch Spyridon said other big cities use incentive-based approaches to attract conventions.
Council members are expected to consider the proposal on Tuesday.
