HAZARD, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky State Police are reminding residents of eastern Kentucky that you've got to play to win.

Trooper Jody Sims in Hazard says a phone scam targeting elderly residents is making the rounds. Sims says someone calls claiming to be a representative from Publishers Clearing House.

In this scam, the caller tells the victim that before they can claim their prize they must pay a large amount of money toward a "Green Dot MoneyPak" re-loadable debit card.

Sims says Green Dot MoneyPak cards are sold in stores across the country and are debit cards used to make same-day payments or add money to prepaid cards or PayPal accounts.

The majority of the calls originate from Nigeria or Jamaica making it tough for U.S. law enforcement to prosecute the offenders.
