WALTON, Ky. (AP) -- Police in northern Kentucky say they are searching for a man who took an officer's shotgun after stealing his cruiser.

A statement from Boone County Sheriff's spokesman Tom Scheben says a deputy had placed the man in the backseat of his car early Monday during an investigation. The statement says the man then drove the vehicle to the Walton area and abandoned the car. Police found the car, but Scheben said the officer's shotgun had been removed.

Police have saturated the area looking for the suspect. He is described at a 6-foot-1 white male with a thin build. He was wearing a black jacket and blue jeans.

Scheben says residents in the area should exercise caution and call police if they see anyone matching the description.
