FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Law enforcement officers in Kentucky are joining in a nationwide campaign to make sure people buckle up before they take off on holiday travel.
The national "Click It or Ticket" Memorial Day seat belt enforcement program gets under way Monday, and the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety has awarded more than $300,000 in federal funds to 64 state and local police agencies across the state to help strengthen enforcement during the campaign.
Transportation Secretary Mike Hancock says this year's campaign will emphasize enforcement at night. The Transportation Cabinet says fatal wrecks are more likely to involve people who aren't buckled up during those hours and that last year two-thirds of people killed in crashes between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. were unrestrained.
The enforcement mobilization runs through June 3.
