EDDYVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A rally this weekend is aimed at gathering more opposition to a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposal to restrict fishing near 10 dams along the Cumberland River and its tributaries in Kentucky and Tennessee.
The Paducah Sun reports organizers of the Freedom to Fish Rally in western Kentucky have lined up speakers including Kentucky Sens. Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul and Rep. Ed Whitfield, as well as Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander.
The corps cited safety concerns when it announced the proposal in December.
It has sparked opposition from residents, fishermen and local officials who say it will eliminate fisheries that bring in an estimated $3 million a year in tourism. They advocate less severe safety measures.
