UPDATE: Semi Hits Bridge On Western Kentucky Parkway

UPDATE, 5/14/13 7:40 CDT
The Western Kentucky Parkway has reopened.

The truck and cargo are cleared. The road has been properly conditioned following the coating of dairy product resulting from the crash.

The bridge is structurally sound. Temporary cones and barrels have been set on the bridge due to the loss of railing from atop the side walls. Department of Highways crews plan to make railing repairs this week.

A semi has overturned, striking the bridge over Valley Creek on the eastbound lanes of the Wendell H. Ford Western Kentucky Parkway in Hardin County.

The accident happened just west of Elizabethtown. All eastbound lanes remain closed. Westbound lanes are open. Eastbound traffic must exit at White Mills (Exit 124). Motorists wishing to continue east toward Elizabethtown should proceed to US 62 via KY 84 from the exit. US 62 traffic in Elizabethtown is very heavy at this time. Local traffic should be aware of the increased volume and allow additional time to reach their destination.

The semi struck a guardrail on approach to the eastbound bridge then sheared off the railing on both side walls before coming to rest on its side, middle way across the bridge.

About half of the trailer portion of the vehicle came to rest hanging over the bridge. The truck was carrying a load of dairy products. The resting position of the vehicle along with it’s cargo contents are complicating the removal and cleanup process. The closure is likely to last another 3 hours.
