Span Set Into Place On Eggner's Ferry Bridge

BENTON, Ky. (AP) -- A new span has been set into place on a western Kentucky bridge that collapsed when it was hit by a cargo ship in January.

Keith Todd of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the span was put into place Tuesday afternoon. It had been brought by three barges from the Eddyville Riverport to the Eggner's Ferry Bridge on Monday, a trip of about 30 miles.

The bridge that carries U.S. 68 and Kentucky 80 between Land Between the Lakes and Aurora has been closed since the 322-foot span was torn down Jan. 26.

Todd says Hall Contracting of Kentucky still plans to meet a May 27 deadline to reopen the span.
