LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Len Peters says the state is working on a plan to curb water pollution.

Peters said his agency is drafting a "nutrient management plan" that would focus on nitrogen and phosphorous.

Peters said the nutrients are the second-leading cause of water-quality impairment in the state, having harmed about 350 bodies of water.

He said states like Kentucky that drain into the Mississippi River also contribute to problems in the Gulf of Mexico.

Peters made the comments this week while attending a multi-state and federal task force meeting in Louisville.

He said a draft of Kentucky's plan is expected to be ready for public review by late spring or early summer.
