It's that time of the year, with fireworks already on sale in the Bowling Green area, many are stocking up, but along with the entertainment of fireworks comes a dangerous side.

Amy Burge, with SkyLite Fireworks on Scottsville Road says she gives customers safety tips, "statistics show that in states where fireworks are legal, people tend to be educated a little more."

Brian O'Callaghan, Bowling Green Fire Department assistant chief of prevention, says if you're under 18 you cannot set off any fireworks that shoot into the air.

Under 18-year-olds can use burning type fireworks, like sparklers and smoke bombs, "you shouldn't let a toddler or infant hold a sparkler that's burning at 2,000 degrees, that should be obvious," he says.

And there are some not-so obvious tips.

"Some of the smaller items that may seem small, but still have a lot of power may easily turn over. For example, anything that goes on the ground that shoots up off the ground needs to be secured in someway shape or form," says Burge.

"Make sure you only purchase from licensed retailers," say O'Callaghan," we have 24 within the city and they're all being inspected on a regular basis."

And while you can't legally set off any fireworks until June 27th, if conditions stay dry, it's the smaller fireworks that can be the most dangerous.

"Especially the novelty items that the kids play with," says Burge, "think about sparklers, they're still very hot once they go out and a kid's attention span isn't very long. When that flame is gone and they're done with it, they just throw that down in the grass that can be dangerous."

"Always consider a dud as a device that will not re-light," says O'Callaghan. "Do not try to pick up or re-light a dud. Then soak those devices as well as anything that is a spent device in the water for a good period of time before you throw it in the trash. That will keep you from having a trash fire."

Always have water nearby, follow the label instructions and most of all, use common sense.

"Definitely use common sense and courtesy," says O'Callaghan, "courtesy will go a long ways in keeping everything going smoothly.

The ordinance states you are only allowed to set off fireworks at specific times and you must be at least 200 feet from a building when setting fireworks off.
