Stivers Files Bill to Protect Military Voting

Senate President Robert Stivers filed legislation Friday to ensure Kentucky soldiers deployed overseas can cast ballots back home.

The bill was given the designation "Senate Bill 1," signifying it is the Senate's top priority in the current legislative session.

Secretary of State Alison Grimes has been pushing for the bill. She said 121 soldiers from Kentucky didn't have their ballots counted in last year's election because they didn't arrive back in the state by Election Day.

The bill allows or electronic transmission of ballots, instead of relying on traditional mail.

Grimes visited soldiers and reviewed military voting during a trip to the Middle East in September. She said she concluded that the current system was falling short.
