The President Offers a Fix to Health Care Problems

The proposed plan is to allow millions of Americans, whose health plans are being canceled, to keep their plans.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- In a news conference today, President Obama offered a fix to those Americans who had their health care coverage canceled due to the Affordable Care Act.

First, he apologized for the problem. Now, he's saying he will fix it, and that he has a plan to do so.

The proposed plan is to allow millions of Americans, whose health plans are being canceled, to keep their plans.

The issue is, what the President calls, the five-percent of Americans who purchase their own health policies in the individual market.
Many of those policies are being canceled because Obama care deems them substandard.

Now, the President has laid out an administrative fix that will allow insurers to renew those policies for one year.

If insurers renew these plans, they must notify policy holders of options in the health exchange marketplace. They'll also have to inform them of benefits they won't receive if they keep their plan.

State insurance commissioners will retain the power to decide what plans can, and can't be sold in their states.

All of this comes, of course, after the President's repeated pledge that "if you like your health plan, you can keep your health plan."

Meanwhile, Republicans are skeptical all this can be done administratively.

Speaker John Boner says the house will vote on a bill, Friday, to allow people to keep their individual insurance plans.
