BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to continue widening 31W between Dillard Rd. and Buchanon Park in Warren County, a continuation of the completed widening between the Natcher Parkway and Dillard Rd.
"Our plans right now are to make it a five lane section just like the other section with a center turn lane, and two lanes in each direction. Plus there'll be some turn lanes at for instance 242, Rich Pond Rd., and into the school," said Department of Highways District 3 Chief Engineer Greg Meredith.
Meredith says the growth of residential areas, schools and businesses has prompted the need for a road that can handle more traffic.
"It's about not only commuter traffic, but school traffic, and business traffic, and more and more residential traffic as the residences in this area increase," said Meredith.
There's one long-standing business in Rich Pond the road widening may not help, and could even eliminate.
"I own the Rich Pond Market and Deli, and there's two or three options, one is no build, but I don't think that's going to be an option, and the other would either put me totally out of business and the building gone, or it would pretty well take all of the front where we wouldn't be able to operate. So I'm hoping it'll work out better than that, but there's a real good chance pretty soon, we'll no longer be there," said Rich Pond Market and Deli owner Neel Dillard.
Dillard says given his fate, he is considering options that may involve moving the store further from the road, but that would involve making adjustments to the sewer line.
Meredith says if plans are approved, he doesn't expect construction to begin until 2016.
