A commercial truck overturned when the pavement broke under it, spilling some hazardous material in southern Kentucky.

Kentucky State Police said about 10 gallons of a sodium hydroxide solution spilled when the truck flipped while making a turn in McCreary County Thursday evening. The accident occurred near the mile 14 marker of U.S. 27, near the Tennessee border.

Sodium hydroxide is an alkali that is used in a variety of commercial applications, including paper manufacturing and in drain cleaners. It is highly caustic and is also commonly called lye or caustic soda.

A portion of U.S. 27 near Whitley City was shut down for several hours while the spill was cleaned up.

Authorities reported no injuries and said the driver is not suspected of using drugs or alcohol.
