Tuesday morning the Red Cross of Southern Kentucky sent our area's first volunteers to aid the Northeast's Sandy clean-up.

Several other businesses are on standby to help out where they are needed.

"We've deployed five volunteers that are all with emergency response vehicles that will go up and do feeding in the new york area," says Jennifer Capps, Director of the American Red Cross of Southern Kentucky.

A second Red Cross group is expected to leave within the next 24 hours.

"We have three disaster volunteers that are getting ready to deploy to go to New Jersey to help with sheltering," Capps says.

And several other volunteers throughout Bowling Green have their bags packed and ready to help if they are needed.

"We have about 8 or 9 others so far that are on standby just waiting for a call to see what their duties will be and where they're needed most," she says.

"The Kentucky Association of Electric Cooperatives, they have asked all electric co-ops in Kentucky for a list of volunteers, and we have sent them a list should we have to go and help in the North," says Rick Carroll, Warren Rural Electric Director of Communications.

15 volunteers are on the list from Warren Rural Electric.

"They would be helping in outage situations, storm situations, replacing poles, replacing power lines and transformers."

More than 7 million people are without power in the North.

Carroll says linemen should know by tomorrow morning whether or not aid will be needed in the disaster stricken areas.

The Bowling Green Salvation Army and the Warren Assc. of Baptists have also confirmed they are waiting to send volunteers to the North.

"It's so much easier for someone to come in from the outside so that the people there can pick up their pieces because so many are affected. It's not that it just hit a few homes, there are many who are devastated," Capps says.

The first group of Red Cross volunteers are expected to be in New York by tomorrow morning.
