OAKLAND, Ky. (AP) -- U.S. Postal Service officials have decided to keep an office in the small city of Oakland open but reduce its hours.

The announcement was made during a meeting at Oakland City Hall Tuesday afternoon. Fourteen of the city's 225 residents attended the meeting, and said they were happy with the decision.

The announcement came as part of a plan by the Postal Service to restructure. Chris Carroll, manager of post office operations in the area, said cost-saving measures are necessary for the agency's financial future.

Carroll said weekdays would be cut back from 8 hours to 4 hours each day beginning in January. It is one of thousands of small post offices across the nation that will scale back hours by 2014.
