Today the Flippin Volunteer Fire Department held a benefit fundraiser to support one of their young firefighters who was recently told due to health issues he needs a heart transplant.

"I just enjoy the thrill of helping others, saving people, and saving lives," says Luke Winter, Firefighter, Flippin Volunteer Fire Dept.

18 year old Luke Winter has aspired to be a firefighter ever since he was 13 years old when he became a member of the Junior Firefighters Program.

"The state of Kentucky has certified him as a firefighter as of February this year. As he has come up he's been a great asset to us," says Captain Chris Hughes, Flippin Volunteer Fire Dept.

After being hospitalized for a stomach infection that would land him in the ICU doctors at Vanderbilt would learn of other health complications.

"It was caused by a stroke. I have blood clots in my heart and lungs but luckily they was able to save me," says Winter.

Now in need of a heart transplant his brother Curtis, whose also on the fire department, says it has been trying times but Luke is strong.

"When I got the news I just started breaking down and crying. He doesn't deserve it," says Curtis Winter.

His fellow firefighters say the fundraiser is just one way they hope to give back to one of their own.

"It is a brotherhood. We all stand next to each other and try to help each other out any way we can, and seeing one of our own go down it brings everybody together and really shows you how close of a family it is," says Lieutenant Eric England, Flippin Volunteer Fire Department.

"My heart is overwhelmed. I'm just glad that I'm loved and people show me support," says Luke.

Despite his recent hardships Luke refuses to give up on his dreams.

"Nothing can hold me back from doing this job."

Luke says he hopes to one day be fire chief.

The proceeds from today's benefit will go towards Luke's hospital bills, if you would like to help you can donate money in Luke Winter's name to the Edmonton State Bank.
