Bowling Green, Ky--Western Kentucky assistant men's basketball coach Phil Cunningham was named the new men's head coach at Troy Tuesday.
Cunningham spent twelve years as an assistant at Mississippi State prior to his brief stint at WKU, which lasted just one season.
"I am very happy for Phil to have the opportunity to become a head coach," WKU head coach Ray Harper said. "He did a great job on our staff this season, and having known him for many years I know that he will do a great job at Troy. Being a head coach is something that almost every assistant coach dreams about, and I am pleased that Phil is getting the chance."
Cunningham replaces Don Maestri, who retired after the Trojans were eliminated from the Sun Belt Tournament.
The Trojans finished 12-21 this past season.
