"If we talk about a community that ages and we continue to age, but the youth the university provides will gives us that spark that will keep us going," says Mayor Wilkerson.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The expansion at Western Kentucky University continues. Friday's grand opening of a brand new alumni center is just the beginning of the university's master plan which calls for more building towards downtown Bowling Green. It's something the city says will bring vital construction.

"Western has been a significant part of the change downtown and that they continue to provide new construction, which provides jobs and opportunities for people to work here in town," says Bowling Green Mayor Bruce Wilkerson.

The WKU campus master plan hopes to build a new business college in the coming years and student apartments on Kentucky Street. Currently, construction workers are hammering away at the Downing University Center as part of a $49 million remodel.

Much of the future planned work comes with a major price tag. Alumni and friends of the university have stepped forward to help cover costs in hopes of a brighter future.

"We've got so much more to do, so much more to grow, but we can begin to marry the downtown Bowling Green area with the campus. We have a lot of real-estate to cover, but we have a tremendous opportunity here to really make Bowling Green a special place. Even more than it is now," says WKU supporter Dale Augenstein.

City officials hope with the test of time an expanding Western Kentucky University will keep Bowling Green moving forward.

"If we talk about a community that ages and we continue to age, but the youth the university provides will gives us that spark that will keep us going," says Mayor Wilkerson.

With more than 21,000 students, city leaders say the university brings a new life and new energy to our area everyday.
