BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) Western Kentucky University students and alumni were celebrating the spirit of WKU in multiple ways Saturday.

"I'm super excited about the scrimmage, about football coming up. I'm ready for the season to start," said Sarah Liszt, a student.

Hundreds of Hilltopper fans were at the Red-White Scrimmage Game this afternoon, kicking off the Jeff Brohm era.

"The team looks good. The thing I've noticed is all the players look real enthusiastic and are playing hard. It looks like everybody's really excited. I know Jeff's out there working hard, and I think they look good," said Oscar Brohm, Coach Brohm's father.

Coach Brohm's father isn't the only one expecting big things during the upcoming football season.

"Looks like it's going to be a good team and a good season so far. I think he's going to do really well coaching everybody," Liszt said.

Another big event happened this morning, the WKU Alumni Association unveiled a statue of Big Red.

"Big Red is special, I guess today proves it -- how much he means to Western. He's more than a mascot. A lot of people ask what is Big Red. Well, Big Red is the spirit of Western. Western's motto is, 'The spirit makes the master,;" said Gef Cherwak, who was the Big Red Mascot from '04 to '08.

He says it was a special day for him and other past mascots who saw each other face to face.

"You know, our whole careers being under the mask, and this is a day to come celebrate all the Big Reds and what Big Red means to this university."

He says the campus is always changing, but the statue will be a lasting symbol that brings back memories for all graduates and keeps the spirit of Western alive.

World-renowned sculptor Russ Faxon designed and crafted the statue, which is a gift from the Young Alumni Council to WKU.
