BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- A new building on Western Kentucky University's campus is proving a new look for students and the community. The "Kentucky Street Apartments" will be the new home to more than 220 students starting this fall.
"We started the planning of this in the fall of 2008, started purchasing the property in 2009, but we put the project on hold so that we could build the apartments across the street that wraps the garage, which was part of the TIF project," Executive Director of Housing and Residence Life, Brian Kuster, said.
Since then, crews have been working to complete the complex.
"Last May, we broke ground for this and students started moving in August 1st," Kuster said.
Student housing officials say this addition is reserved for students with more than 60 credit hours, who generally move away from campus.
"It gives them a chance to have the safety and security of living on campus, in that environment, with the chance to live in an apartment environment. It also provides that on-campus community. We hear a lot of students, as they move off campus, feel a little disconnected and now they get the chance to live in that on-campus environment with the freedom of living in an apartment," Apartment Living Coordinator, Minnette Ellis, said.
Each unit offers top of the line amenities, including a personal security system.
"The video shows up of their guest. They can talk to their guest and buzz them in from the apartment to unlock the front door and that's how they enter the apartments," Ellis said.
One resident says the location is ideal for many upperclassmen.
"It's great for the campus to keep the students that are wanting the outside life, wanting to feel like they are on their own, living in an apartment, but having it here on campus," Student, Daniel Padilla, said.
University officials believe this building adds appeal to the campus and community.
"We really have rejuvenated this part of campus and part of town. It is going to continue from campus to downtown," Kuster said.
This is just the first group of Hilltoppers moving back to campus.
First year students enrolled in "M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan" will begin moving in on August 17th. All other students will move in on the 21st.
