Warren County Highway to Get Major Construction

The sun is setting on a section of Highway 185 as you may know it, but many see the coming change as a great improvement.

The state department of highways is looking to create a new stretch of highway in Warren County.

Local officials say parts of Highway 185 are dangerous.

"Over there on what we call they Y hill or the Anna hill, that's a very dangerous section with the incline and the curves," said Warren County Magistrate Terry Young.

"Safety is really the driving force behind the project, and most of what we're hearing from the public is favorable to improve the roadway," said Joe Plunk, Branch Manager for Project Development.

Officials say along with safety traffic flow is another big reason for the project.

"That road handles traffic all the way to Breckinridge county. People coming into Bowling Green, students going to school at Western Kentucky University, a lot of them use that road to get to and from," said Young.

The project will cost about 24 million dollars and create a new stretch of 185 that's a little more than five miles long from Pruitt Road to the Butler County line.

"The reconstruction will flatten the grades provide for wider lanes that include passing lanes as well as shoulders for the traffic," said Plunk.

County officials hope with this new road, comes new opportunities.

"It will encourage business. I think it will increase property values. Anytime you get a good road, it helps everybody," said Plunk.

Officials say construction could begin as early as 2015 and be completed in 2017.

Right now, they are still dealing with getting some of the land and properties the new highway would run through.
