FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Work is beginning on the first phase of a project to build two bridges that will become a gateway to the Land Between the Lakes region in western Kentucky.

Gov. Steve Beshear's office says crews have begun clearing brush and trees to make way for construction of a bridge to span a lagoon on the western shore of Kentucky Lake.

The new Lagoon Bridge will serve as an approach to a new four-lane bridge that will be built over the main lake to replace the Eggners Ferry Bridge.

The work is part of a larger project to build new bridges on Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley.

State Transportation Secretary Mike Hancock says the Lagoon Bridge project has a strict timetable and should allow the state to contract for construction of the main span in about a year.
