Yarmuth Speaks Out for Gun Measures

The last remaining Democrat in Kentucky's congressional delegation says he's willing to take on the gun lobby in pushing for legislation aimed at reducing gun violence in a country grieving over the massacre in a Connecticut school.

An emotion-choked U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth apologized Monday for being mostly silent about gun violence. The Louisville Democrat said public officials need to reflect on their responsibilities in the wake of the shooting in Newtown, Conn., that left 20 schoolchildren dead.

Yarmuth said the National Rifle Association has instilled fear in politicians, but says it's more rational to fear guns far more than the NRA.

Yarmuth says it's unlikely the massacre could have been prevented by any law, but says the gunman was the product of a culture that sees guns as a solution to problems.
