FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- The Kentucky Supreme Court has upheld a law allowing the state to take DNA samples from juveniles convicted of some sex offenses.
The ruling issued Thursday turned away a challenge brought by five unidentified juveniles.
The high court ruled that providing a DNA sample doesn't undermine a juvenile's rights to confidentiality or the constitutional right against unreasonable searches and seizures.
The five juveniles had sued the Department of Juvenile Justice, saying the law did not require them to submit DNA samples for inclusion in a state and national database after conviction.
Under the law, anyone convicted of a felony who was 14-years-old or older at the time of the offense or convicted of certain sex offenses can be compelled to give a DNA sample.
