UPDATE 5:30PM 9/23/13
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO)- Bowling Green Police continued their investigation at 8:00 this morning and it lasted all day after a body was found in a wooded area off of Russellville Road on Sunday night.
"It was so dark in the area behind us in the woods that we weren't able to do any processing last night or in the overnight hours either," says Officer Ronnie Ward of the Bowling Green Police Department.
Firefighters were brought in early Monday morning to cut trees and a hole in a chain link fence to reach the body. Nearby residents say the wooded area, that has a steep embankment, isn't often traveled.
"There was an ambulance that had shown up at a friend of ours house. We just went down there to make sure it wasn't her and when we got down there the ambulance driver asked us how to get behind there so we took them to an easier spot to get through," says resident Jessica Dail.
The body of 31-year-old Darrell Gregory was removed just after 1:00 p.m. Police are unsure how long it was in the wooded area. He was reported missing on September 7th by his mother and was last seen at the Western Hills Motel on Morgantown Road.
"Some juveniles playing in this area had located what they believed to be a body. Our officers responded and did observe a badly decomposed body," says Officer Ward.
It's the type of discovery that has neighbors on edge, until the investigation is over.
"I mean it's pretty quiet around here usually, but stuff does happen anywhere you live," says Dail.
Tonight police continue to investigate if Gregory is a victim of foul play or died of natural causes.
