Despite Rain Filled Summer, Officials Say Tourism Still Made Big Impact

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - It was no secret this summer was full of rain and it had both positive and negative impacts on local tourism.

"Our summer visitation was impacted this year by the amount of rain that we have had," says Rho Lansden, Executive Director at Lost River Cave.

Water from near record summer rains are slowly receding at Lost River Cave. Runoff caused a rise in river levels and the closure of some boat tours.

"We are the bottom of the bathtub for a 50 square mile area so here in Bowling Green the rain that comes down will eventually end off in the area of the cave tours," says Lansden.

Dry weather now has more tourists out and about, but it won't make up for the summer's loses.

"You can't get those days back, but we find ways to cut our overhead and expenses and we move through it," says Lansden.

Despite the wet weather, attendance revved up at the National Corvette Museum thanks to the premiere of the new C7 stingray. Attendance slides once school returns, but mother nature rarely plays a roll.

"The weather doesn't really affect us. When it's hot, it's a great place to cool off. When it's raining you can still come in," says Marketing and Communications Manager, Katie Frassinelli.

The Bowling Green Area Convention and Visitors Bureau says tourism across our area still makes an impact. That's why a new branding, "Geared for Fun", will premiere over the coming months.

"We are just getting all of the materials here at the end of this project from the company and their associates who are working with us and we are very excited to be able to tell the community about it," says Executive Director, Vicki Fitch.

Research from visitors and the community alike helped pick the new branding.
