Fireworks Sales Begin, City Wants To Remind Of Laws

"Just use a lot of common sense when you're using the fireworks and also try to remember to let your neighbors know that you are going to be using them to avoid anybody having issues with the loud noises," says Kim Lancaster, Public Information Officer for the City of Bowling Green.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - A sign of summer celebration has returned with 4th of July fireworks sales starting this past weekend. Local sellers. like Skylite Fireworks, are glad to be back after a dismal 2012.

"Maybe, arguably one of the worst years in fireworks history across the board. The extreme heat, the drought, the burn bans certainly put a scare in everyone and rightfully so," says owner Amy Burge.

Fireworks are synonymous with the 4th of July, which has many customers returning. Although last season was tough, they still put their purchase to use.

"A lot of folks that bought from us last year are saying they celebrated when the burn bands were lifted. People love to celebrate on special occasions," says Burge.

Dana Lockett says last summer was disappointing for his family, but with green grass all around this season, they hope to make up for lost time.

"That did put a hold up on buying fireworks, but this year we are going all out. We bought the big one here and it has 21 cakes in it and we are ready to go," says Lockett.

Before residents put on their own show, the City of Bowling Green is reminding everyone of the basic safety rules.

"Just use a lot of common sense when you're using the fireworks and also try to remember to let your neighbors know that you are going to be using them to avoid anybody having issues with the loud noises," says Kim Lancaster, Public Information Officer for the City of Bowling Green.

Within city limits residents can set off fireworks between June 27 and July 5 from noon to 10 p.m. Those hours will be extended to 11 p.m. on the 4th of July.
