BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - Former Bowling Green City Commissioner Slim Nash has had enough of fireworks. He wants the city to take action now.

"It is vitally important in my opinion that they stand up, that they take on the reigns of leadership and make a better decision then the one they made in the past concerning the ordinance that we have on the books now," says Nash.

The current ordinance allows fireworks between June 27 and July 5 from Noon to 10:00 p.m., or 11 p.m. on July 4th. Nash admits even though he is off the commission he has received complaints from residents.

"Hearing loud booms outside their house late at night at what I believe are unreasonable hours creates a concern that is really unnecessary," says Nash.

The City of Bowling Green has also been hearing complaints. They say the rules are being enforced by police. More types of fireworks became legal in the state of Kentucky in 2011, because of that the city stands by the current ordinance.

"When the state made it legal to sell the larger fireworks our response was we can ban it completely, but that won't stop it. People are going to want to celebrate," says Bowling Green Mayor Bruce Wilkerson.

Even with the ordinance, you can't set off fireworks anywhere.

"State law requires that those fireworks be discharged more than 200 feet away from any existing structure, that pretty well limits where you can shoot them in the city anyway," says Mayor Wilkerson.

To help those who may want to celebrate a website has been setup showing areas of the city where space allows for fireworks.
