The Kentucky Department of Highways is working on the fifth and final phase of a multi-million dollar road project in Glasgow.

The final piece to the Veterans Outer Loop will serve as a key section for economic boost for Glasgow.

"It's kind of like having a very important puzzle with one piece that was missing. And so we feel like once this last piece is in place that traffic will increase even more dramatically, and this piece is the part that goes to our industrial area," says Glasgow Mayor Rhonda Trautman.

"This project has been talked about for at least 20 years a lot of people were proponents for this project," Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Public Information Officer Keirsten Jaggers says.

When construction was started on the Glasgow Outer Loop more than a decade ago, town officials were looking for economic development, along with a quicker way to get through town.

Ten years, and more than $60 million later the bypass road is almost complete.

The Kentucky Department of Highways is currently working on the last two and half mile section.

"We're looking at being completed in the fall of 2014. If you drive through now you're going to see that they are working on the pier and the overpass for the interchange itself," Jaggers says.

"We're very pleased that they saw the need to go ahead and continue it and get the final phase in. This is the part where most of the traffic we feel will benefit our industry and our economic development," Mayor Trautman says.

The last section will connect to the parkway adding another exit point at the 8 mile-marker.

Once completed the Outer Loop will be nine miles.

"It's helping people get from point A to point B a little faster and it helps people with going to school and going to work. So it's benefiting a lot of people in the community," says Mayor Trautman.

Mayor Trautman says the Outer Loop has diverted industrial traffic from an already busy downtown Glasgow.

The last phase of the Veterans Outer Loop is the longest and most expensive project since construction began ten years ago.
