BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - By day she's an employee at Houchens Industries, by night a student at Western Kentucky University, and in between a volunteer in our community.

"It's fun. I enjoy it. It's like an extracurricular thing for me," says Katie Moore.

Moore recently got to work again, collecting unused office supplies and donating them to stuff the bus.

"She was such a huge critical person at Stuff the Bus with helping us get donations and supplies and raising awareness and funds for Stuff the Bus and she wouldn't take any attention for it so that to me is what a real Hometown Hero is all about," says Tony Rose.

Moore's work extends across different agencies. After her grandmother was diagnosed with cancer she turned an old break room into a fundraising site for the American Cancer Society, selling unused items from Houchens stores.

"Everything that she does she does from her heart and she gives selflessly to others and everything she does she puts 200% in," says Angie Geron of the Warren County chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Her effort wasn't more apparent than at this year's Relay for Life. Moore not only led team Houchens, but was a member of the board. Volunteers are the life blood of the American Cancer Society.

"All of our dollars that we raise to go towards cancer research is all done by volunteers. Katie makes my job easier and if I had 1,000 katie's I would probably not have a job because we would have a cure for cancer," says Geron.

Katie says it's the people that keep her going strong. At Relay for Life, it was a complete stranger.

"The survivors were doing their 1st lap and he just walked up to me and grabbed my hand and he looked me in the eye and he said thank you for everything that you have done you have no idea what this means to me. That alone is just payment enough," says Moore.
