"We had enough money put together that we said ok for those kids that come to that kids only event you're going to get a free pair of shoes. They went crazy. It was fun for me," says Wheet.

GLASGOW, Ky. (WBKO) - Lilly Wheet is making an impact on kids lives one step at a time. She has been an avid runner all her life, running in three Boston marathons. One year ago she started an after-school running club at North Warren Elementary to pass her love on to the next generation.

"We had about 40 some kids show up for an after school run club so that prompted me to say hey it's going to be a good thing, if it's going to work at this school lets try it at a lot of other places," says Wheet.

Now, 13 area schools have started a club. Coaches say many kids have hit the pavement in hopes of one day competing in a race.

"They have really enjoyed it. It took awhile to build up their endurance but as they did they really saw how much they have accomplished. Our kids did a couple of 5K's," says Coach Ashley Browning.

But kids say it's more than just an opportunity to be competitive.

"I think it gives us as kids a chance to be more active and having a better chance of making our bodies fit and it mostly helps us not become obese once we grow up," says Dinah Miranda.

This past May, Lilly Wheet continued passing on her passion. More than 200 kids ran in the first ever Bowling Green Kids Run. The event was free and thanks to local sponsors and support an extra incentive was waiting at the finish line.

"We had enough money put together that we said ok for those kids that come to that kids only event you're going to get a free pair of shoes. They went crazy. It was fun for me," says Wheet.

For giving kids the feeling of team spirit, and living a healthy life, we honor Lilly Wheet as this week's Hometown Hero.
