"Get the necessities. The things that you know your kids are absolutely going to use and then go down the list from there," says Elisabeth Fielder-Hix of the Kentucky Savings Group.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - Parents say back to school shopping can be one of the most stressful times of year on their wallets, but there are alternatives to spending big bucks.

"There is such a big list that we have so much to do it's just too hard to go to different places," says Kelly Koons, who is shopping for 3 kids.

Parents across the area are grabbing their shopping carts, looking for back to school deals. Kelly Koons says the shear list of school supplies could fill her cart within minutes.

"Glue sticks, flash drives, tab dividers, notebooks, you name it. It's a very large list," says Koons.

That list could add up to big bucks, but exactly how much? I grabbed a school supply list and hit a local store looking for great deals. I quickly found out just finding an item isn't an easy task. My list had an 8 pack of jumbo glue sticks, but the store only had a 6 pack of normal glue sticks.

My first grade list had everything on it from crayons, to cleaning products. I crunched the numbers at the end of the day and I spent just over $65.

Shopping for multiple children can add up, which is why the Kentucky Savings Group says start simple.

"Get the necessities. The things that you know your kids are absolutely going to use and then go down the list from there," says Elisabeth Fielder-Hix of the Kentucky Savings Group.

Although your list may be specific, it's ok to shop around.

"The top brand names sure they sell and your list may even say that from your school, but you are not required to purchase brand name items," says Mari Whitlow.

And for those parents who want to get the best deal, they may have to do more digging than last year.

"It is not that it is more expensive we are just not seeing the cut throat sales we have seen in the past," says Whitlow.

With school bells near supplies will continue to fly off store shelves.
