"It might be a little sad but I think that the new school is going to be such a great thing for our students and our teachers that we all are just going to be so excited we just can't wait to get into the new building," says Cothern.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - It was the final first day step off the bus and the last greeting of a new teacher at one Bowling Green elementary school.

"It's great to see all the kids getting here and getting them settled and realizing next year there is going to be a bigger space for them to be in and more space for everyone," says Principal Michael Wix.

This is the final year of the Dishman-McGinnis Elementary School on Old Morgantown Road. Construction is well underway at their new school on Glen Lily Road. An expanding student body, and aging school, mean it was time to move.

"The building is still a great school building, but there are just so many things that have changed in those years. Things weren't built back then to handle the technology and load that was required to power those things in those days," says Wix.

Long time teachers are looking forward to the change. Librarian Cherie Cothern is starting her 13th year. Her room is literally stuffed with books.

"My library is going to be over twice as big as it is now. So I can't wait to fill the shelves with books. I am really excited," says Cothern.

Teachers admit the school year flies by. With every first day, comes a last day. This year it may be bittersweet one with a bright future ahead.

"It might be a little sad but I think that the new school is going to be such a great thing for our students and our teachers that we all are just going to be so excited we just can't wait to get into the new building," says Cothern.

Construction at the new Dishman-McGinnis Elementary School is on schedule. School officials say because the new school is located just blocks away from the old school much of the student body will stay the same.
