BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - The green flag has waved on construction for the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park. Officials are calling it a world class race track that will replicate Le Mans, one of the most famous sports car racing facilities.

"Here they will be able to test for the Porsche curves, and for the mulsanne straight which is famous for the high speeds. This is the only place where you can do testing," says Project Manager Roc Linkov.

Teams from NASCAR and Indycar could also use the track. The main goal is for the average fan to take a spin in their own car. Planning began almost six years ago and track officials admit not everyone was on board.

"This is it. Any doubts before when I would talk to people well will it ever be built? Yes it's going to be built now," says Linkov.

"It has been such a long time in the planning and finally now making it happen where we are able to see things really going on it's just a wonderful feeling," says Executive Director Wendell Strode.

The tracks board of directors say the facility will be used for education and recreational purposes, open to everyone. But one car they do hope to see on track is the new C7 stingray which also had a premiere of its own on Friday.

"It's another milestone in a long long legacy of milestones. Corvette is very very important to us. To have a car that has been around for 60 years is amazing," says Marketing Manager for Chevy Performance Cars, John Fitzpatrick.

Corvette is calling Friday's unveiling the "Premiere Edition" of the 2014 Stingray. Only 500 will be made, with all of them containing limited edition features.

The National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park hopes to open Labor Day 2014.
