Only Female WKUPD Officer Resigns, After Shift Change Interferes With Family

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - After seven and a half years on the WKU police force, public information officer Mandi Johnson has suddenly resigned.

"I enjoyed what I did. I enjoyed being a police officer," says Johnson.

And it's not the end Officer Johnson was hoping for.

"I intended on retiring from there and you know that didn't work out," says Johnson.

A shift change put Johnson on second shift. She says that would have been fine, if it weren't for her two small children. Her husband works a similar night shift at the Warren County Sheriff's Office. Johnson says her department was aware of the situation.

"We had anticipated this coming, so we had been working on it for quite awhile to try and find child care and so when they actually told me we had already discussed, my husband and I, what was going to happen so we just accepted it," says Johnson.

The only female on the WKU force, walked away from her dream job. Word quickly spread among the Kentucky Women's Law Enforcement Network, who is now helping Johnson find new employment.

"Some departments have been able to work with their schedules and home life, but it's all about the sacrifice in general that in order to be in this work it involves working various shifts," says Network President, Jennifer Colemire.

Although some may say Johnson was forced from her position, there aren't any hard feelings on her end.

"I would be willing to go back, but right now it wouldn't be good timing with my kids being so small," says Johnson.

Johnson says she has received phone calls from lawyers, but is unsure if she will seek legal action.

We reached out to Western Kentucky University and the police department for comment, but they say they cannot speak about personnel matters.
