GLASGOW, Ky. (WBKO) - The man who claims he is the "best panhandler in the world" appeared in Barren County Court Monday morning after an arrest over the weekend.

Gary Thompson pleaded not guilty on disorderly conduct and criminal mischief charges after an incident Saturday night at the Happy Valley Inn. In court, he was wheeled away twice for interrupting proceedings. He begged the judge to set him free Monday after what he claims was a recent leg injury.

"I'm supposed to get a knee immobilizer and the jail won't allow me to have that knee immobilizer because it has metal in it and I have to wear that for my leg to heal. So if you would, I would like to be released on my own because I am now living in Glasgow," said Thompson to the judge.

Thompson was sentenced to 8 days in jail and will be released July 6.
