BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - It's some of the worst flooding Colorado has ever seen. 1,500 homes gone, more than 17,000 damaged and thousands of people are stranded. The South Central Kentucky chapter of the American Red Cross has been monitoring the situation.

"We are going through with our volunteers. We have one that is going to be leaving tomorrow (Tuesday) morning early. We are still recruiting some additional volunteer to go out in our health and mental health fields," says Bill Schlicht, Director of Emergency Services.

More than a dozen volunteers are also on standby. As residents of colorado are rescued, many are being brought to the Boulder Airport. For now, that's also where Red Cross volunteers from South Central Kentucky will be stationed.

"Once the flooding recedes and stops we will be able to go in and assess damage and the people as they are needed, but right now we are partnering with emergency management and the National Guard to make sure their immediate needs are met," says Executive Director, Jennifer Capps.

Many volunteers heading to Colorado already have experience from weather disasters earlier this year.

"We have had so much flooding. Normally we wouldn't have as much flooding, we would have more tornados and hurricane responses but this year we haven't had any hurricanes thank goodness," says Schlicht

With September being National Preparedness Month the Red Cross is reminding everyone the images from Colorado can happen anywhere, including here at home. They hope families take action now to prepare.

"Build a disaster supply kit. Be able to take care of your family for three to five days. 72 to 120 hours," says Schlicht.

Volunteers say having a plan in place can save your life.
