The Kentucky Board of Education brushes aside a request from Governor-Elect Steve Beshear to reopen its search for a new commissioner.

Board Chairman Joe Brothers says the board has selected a candidate from four finalists and wants to make an announcement November 25.

Brothers says the board has heard the message statewide that it's time to make a decision.

The job has been vacant since Gene Wilhoit left last November.

In May, the board hired former Illinois educator Barbara Erwin.

But she resigned in July before she even started the position.

Beshear said in a brief statement that he is "deeply disappointed" in the board's decision to forgo a broader search.
