New Warren County Taxes?

A $3 million projected budget shortfall has many Warren County agencies facing budget cuts.

To help shore up funds, Warren County property owners may see three new taxes.

The first reading of an ordinance amending next year's budget passed on June 18, 2007, by a five-to-one vote. Magistrate Terry Young was the lone "no" vote.

The amended version includes three new taxes.

If approved on June 21, the taxes would be for the Soil Conservation Office, the county extension office, and the health department.

"Those are three things we hope will fund themselves at the end of this calendar year with the special taxes that they will collect and there won't be anything that comes out of the general fund for those three items this way," said Mike Buchanon, Warren County Judge-Executive.

Buchanon said Warren County currently has the fourth lowest county tax rate in the state and said if these new taxes are approved, the end result won't be as bad as you might think.

"They're so small, that they only add less than three pennies per $100 of value," Buchanon said.

Here is how the taxes look broken down:

  • Health Department: 2 cents per $100
  • County Extension Office: .006 cents per $100
  • Soil Conservation Office: .0035 cents per $100

Judge Buchanon said, monthly, this will cost the average property owner around three cents per $100. In the long run, he said that's less than $30 a year.

"Even with those three things added, we're still the ninth lowest out of 120 counties in the Commonwealth, so we're very proud of that," Buchanon said.

A resolution on this tax proposal will be voted on at the next fiscal court meeting on June 21, at 10:00 a.m. If approved, the taxes will be included in your property tax bill later this year.
