General Explains War Assessment

The top American commander in Iraq returns to Capitol Hill on Sept. 11 to explain his assessment on the war.

General David Petraeus goes before two Senate panels, whose members include five presidential candidates from both parties.

On Sept. 10, he outlined plans to bring up to 30,000 troops home from Iraq by next summer.

As he did so, Petraeus said U.S. military goals have in large part been met and the Iraqi military is stepping up.

Most House Democrats who quizzed Petraeus said they preferred a swifter withdrawal than what the general is planning.
