FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Governor Steve Beshear plans to appoint a new commission to review the state's tax code and to recommend reforms.

Beshear told business leaders attending a Kentucky Chamber of Commerce dinner Thursday, Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson will lead the commission through several months of study over the coming year. And a consultant will be hired to review the kinds of tax reforms that have worked in other states.

The governor said he will challenge the commission to recommend changes that will make the tax code fair, competitive, simple and adequate to fund state services.

Beshear said waiting until 2013 to propose tax reforms to the legislature allows time to build consensus, and allows more time for the state's economic recovery to take hold.
