A judge ordered Medi-Share out of Kentucky last year. The ministry resembles secular insurance in some ways, but only allows participation by people who pledge to live Christian lifestyles.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- A House committee has passed a bill that would exempt a Christians-only health care ministry from insurance regulations.

The move by the House Banking and Insurance Committee came Thursday afternoon, just minutes before the Senate Banking and Insurance committee voted to confirm the appointment of Insurance Commissioner Sharon Clark.

Republican Sen. Tom Buford of Nicholasville, sponsor of the legislation that would allow Florida-based Medi-Share to resume operation in Kentucky, said the back-to-back votes were coincidence. However, Buford's bill and Clark's confirmation had been in question before Thursday's meetings.
