Bowling Green City Commission Questions New Baseball Facility

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- The Bowling Green City Commission is looking at some big decisions coming up in the future, one park could be changing and your primary election day ballot as well.

The commission spent more than an hour asking questions and addressing concerns over a new baseball facility.

Major league baseball player and Bowling Green native Corey Hart wants to pay for an 8,000 square foot building to be built in Kereiakas Park for little league players to have a place to practice.

Tuesday at the work session city commissioners asked questions gave comments and expressed concerns with those involved for more than an hour.

They spoke with city officials,Little League organizers and Hart's father.

Commissioners expressed concerns over cost who would be able to use it and more.

One commissioner feels very strongly this is an exclusive investment and isn't beneficial to everyone.

Those involved with little league say this is about helping all children.

"It is still an exclusive feel only for a few. That is my feeling today. That is my feelings before today," said Bowling Green City Commissioner Joe Denning.

"We're not trying to exclude people. If you have a relationship with the Little Leagues in Warren County, I would not exclude people from a Little League use of the facility," said Jay Lawless, Bowling Green East Little League President.

Commissioners also wanted to know if this would be open to the general public a portion of the year.

As far as the cost goes, there was no official figure given, but Hart would pay for the construction.

The city would be required to pay utilities and maintenance after that.

This was just a work session and no action was taken by commissioners.

They also looked at getting rid of primary elections for city offices which they can do now because of a new state law.

The next commission meeting is the first Tuesday in September.
