State Budget Conference Committee Continues On

"This disease discriminates against no one, and we need to take every step we can and do what we need to do to continue the prevention we have gained over the last few years," said House Majority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins, D-Sandy Hook.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WBKO) -- Every two years state lawmakers have to figure out how and where to spend every precious dollar.

As you can imagine, it's not an easy process.

Governor Steve Beshear, D-Kentucky made a proposal, the House put their version out and then the Senate does theirs.

They didn't agree, so now begins the long hours in conference committee between democratic house leadership and republican senate leadership.

One of the more talked about topics today included health care coverage and some cancer screenings.

"These are all mandated coverages now. Everyone of them, and if things are as they're said to be. Individuals who go into receive these services if they don't have coverage are there and should be able to get coverage," said Senate President Sen. Robert Stivers, R-Manchester.

"I would agree with you if this was our budget two years from now, but with the uncertainty of those that will be eligible and those that will enroll in the kynect program. We're not sure how many of those will by March 31st," said Rep. Jimmie Lee, D-Elizabethtown.

At times it was emotional, especially for one cancer survivor.

"This disease discriminates against no one, and we need to take every step we can and do what we need to do to continue the prevention we have gained over the last few years," said House Majority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins, D-Sandy Hook.

This issue like several others has lawmakers in opposite chambers divided, and the conference committee still has a long way to go on several issues.

This was one of many topics discussed Thursday.

Lawmakers still have to hash out issues like higher education funding, mining safety, money for Rupp Arena renovations and more.
