Updated: Wed 6:42 PM, Aug 10, 2011

The deadline to throw your hat into the race to be Bowling Green's next mayor is over.

Three candidates are set to be on the ballot, one who signed up at the last minute

The candidates include current Mayor Joe Denning,City Commissioner Bruce Wilkerson and a last minute add, Brandon Peay.

Peay is a sophomore at WKU.

He says he wants to run because he feels he can better the city, "I wanted to run for a public office and I saw that mayor was available and so was city commission but I thought mayor would be a bigger step for me."

Mayor Denning says he wants to make Bowling Green a leading edge community and with his experience he feels he can do just that.

"I want people from outside of Bowling Green to look at Bowling Green and say we are an innovated community," he says.

Commissioner Bruce Wilkerson had his name in the hat since the first day.

He says, he wants to make the city government as efficient as possible while saving the most money.

"I look for savings everywhere yet, still fulfill those functions that the city is required to do. Police, fire, streets, park facilities, those are our top four and everything else we will try to work in there as well."

Peay lost his mother to breast cancer and he says he wants to make her proud.

"I know it's only one term but to get that experience my mom would be proud," says Peay.

While the other two candidates feel they have experience on their side.

Peay says he hopes he will have the support of the college community.

All three candidates will be running for just a one-year term to finish out former mayor Elaine Walker's term.

Another election for mayor will be held in 2010 for a four year term.
