Kentucky Looking to Pay Off Loan for State's Unemployment Insurance

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Democratic Governor Steve Beshear is still working on a way to make a $28 million interest payment due in just over a month, on a $900 million federal loan that has kept the state's unemployment insurance program afloat.

Beshear, who is seeking re-election, said Monday he will announce his plan soon, so Kentucky businesses can avoid feared financial penalties.

Monday Republican Senate President David Williams, who is running against Beshear, called on the governor to fix the problem or call the legislature into session to handle it.

Beshear said he would call lawmakers back to Frankfort only if no other options are available.

Williams said the governor needs to act quickly because, if the loan payment isn't made, businesses could have to pay more than $400 per employee.
