McGaha Won't Seek Re-election to State Senate

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- McGaha, an ardent social conservative who is part of a southern Gospel singing group, said in a statement Wednesday, other obligations have cut into the time he can devote to the legislature.

McGaha represents Adair, Casey, Pulaski and Russell counties. The 64-year-old retired teacher, band director and principal has served in the legislature since 1996.

McGaha is the second Republican state senator to announce his departure in the coming year. Northern Kentucky's Jack Westwood said earlier this year that he won't seek re-election.

Both represent solidly Republican districts, which would make it difficult for Democrats to pick up the open seats. Republicans now hold the majority in the Senate with 22 of the 38 seats.
