Sen. Paul Offers Free Eye Surgeries

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- An eye surgeon turned U.S. senator is keeping his medical skills sharp by doing pro bono eye surgeries for the uninsured in Kentucky.

Republican Rand Paul is scheduled to remove cataracts from four patients in Paducah Tuesday.

Paul was a longtime ophthalmologist in Bowling Green, before he was elected to the Senate in 2010. The tea party darling said Tuesday, he has found his pro bono work during Senate recesses to be especially rewarding. Many of his patients have had extremely poor vision because, lacking insurance, they have put off treatment.

Paul said they end up being "the happiest people you'll ever meet."
