Rep. Richards Talks Forty Years of Fancy Farm

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- It's the one day in Kentucky politics that's known for its heckling, BBQ, yelling and old school stump speeches.

The Fancy Farm Picnic is the weekend event that kicks off the fall season of politics.

Though it's a small community, it attracts the biggest names on the Kentucky political scene.

This year, it will be headlined by Sen. Mitch McConnell and his challenger, democrat Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.

Former Speaker of the House Rep. Jody Richards, D-Bowling Green has attended several picnics and has spent his fair share of time talking to the raucous crowds.

"I spoke a couple of times when I was running for Governor and yea there was a lot of yelling. You just have to keep talking and eventually they will slow down a little," said Richards.

Richards remembered some great speeches between former Governors Wendell Ford and Happy Chandler, talking about how great of speakers both were at the event. He also recalled some more lighthearted fun on those warm August Saturdays.

"When I was Speaker of the House, Ernie Fletcher did a poem on me and it was a Dr. Seuss poem. It was pretty cute. It wasn't too kind, but the next year I did a poem on him based on Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. So, they're fun," said Richards.

As you can imagine, it's usually a fun atmosphere usually accompanied by some good one-liners, and we will be right there to bring all the days events to you this weekend. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
